Blackroot, the Last Refuge

The Final Breath of Civilization on the Island of Titans

Blackroot from a distance

Tucked into the lee of a jagged hill, swallowed by the ever-encroaching forest, Blackroot stands as the last breath of civilization on the Island of Titans — a place where survival is measured in quiet nights and how long the torches burn before the darkness swallows them whole.

The village is ringed by a weathered wooden palisade, reinforced with scavenged metal and bones of creatures best left unspoken. It is a settlement of outcasts, opportunists, and desperate souls who refuse to kneel before the island’s relentless dangers.

A fragile coalition of humans, dwarves, elves, and even wandering goblins call Blackroot home, each knowing that unity is their only shield against the horrors lurking beyond the trees. Many are exiles cast onto the island by forces beyond their control, while others arrived seeking riches in the ruins of the ancients. Some never leave, not because they wouldn’t, but because they’ve seen what hunts the roads beyond.

The Town Link to heading

Oni Guards of Blackroot

Despite its bleak existence, Blackroot is a town of necessity and resilience. Crude, multistoried structures lean on each other for support, made from salvaged wood, stone, and repurposed wreckage. A central well provides water, though few trust its depths. The market is filled with scavenged goods from forgotten ruins, traded in hushed whispers before dusk — for none risk being caught outside when night falls.

At the heart of Blackroot stands the Hearthspire, a towering brazier that remains lit at all times, said to ward off the island’s curses. Yet, for all its flickering light, even the Hearthspire’s glow does little to push back the oppressive weight of the unknown.

The people of Blackroot do not ask where you came from — only what you can do to help them last another day.

Key NPCs of Blackroot Link to heading

Blackthorne, the Iron Widow Link to heading

Blackthorne

Blackthorne is the unchallenged leader of Blackroot, a name spoken with fear, respect, and bitter admiration. She is tall and lean, her muscular frame hardened by years of struggle, and her presence alone is enough to silence a room.

She is not a queen, nor a warlord, but something far more dangerous — a survivor who will do whatever it takes to keep her people alive. Some say she once had a husband, a warrior as fierce as she, but he fell defending Blackroot from raiders. She did not mourn openly — she simply picked up his sword and finished the battle herself.
